About This Spot

Stepping into The Lakeside Cafe feels like finding a quiet corner where time slows just enough for you to breathe a little deeper. Nestled on Spa Pool Road in Askern, this modest cafe offers more than just a place to eat—it unfolds as a gentle pause by the water’s edge, where the calm ripple of the lake whispers alongside the clink of cups and low murmur of conversation.

The atmosphere carries the easy rhythm of a local spot well-loved by those who know it, inviting visitors to settle in with a quiet smile. Whether it's a sunny morning where the warmth spills through the windows or a calm afternoon where you can watch clouds drift lazily over the lake, The Lakeside Cafe feels unhurried but warmly attentive. Service here moves at a human pace—sometimes a patient pause before food arrives, but always marked by genuine friendliness and a welcoming spirit that makes waiting part of the experience rather than a frustration.

On the plate, you'll find a comforting honesty—meals that offer the sort of warmth and satisfaction you want on a day by the water. The familiar scents of breakfast cooking mingle with the promise of a Sunday lunch served in hearty portions, brightened by touches like fragrant garlic bread or a blueberry muffin that tastes like both nostalgia and a simple treat. The food doesn’t shout for attention but accompanies the view and the company with a quiet, steady presence.

Outside, the lakeside seating captures the essence of this place perfectly. It’s a slice of Askern that beckons walkers, day-trippers, and locals alike to pause and watch the world go by—from fishermen casting lines to families sharing stories over plates well-filled. For many who return here, The Lakeside Cafe is woven into their own sense of home, a place that holds both memory and moment in equal measure.

Stopped off here for lunch, whilst on long drive from Kent coast to Durham.. First time back in my Birth town ,for 12 years. Always wanted to go here, it was quiet, friendly staff, great view over the lake. Had the small Sunday lunch, choice of meats, more than enough for me, and tasty. Ever that way again ,will pop in again. Askern has changed, but its my home town still.

Visited for a spot of breakfast and arrived about 10:30. Unfortunately we didn't get any food until 11:05. Quite bad for a breakfast and a bacon butty (a sausage and some scrambled eggs for Heinz). Approximately 4 other tables in when we ordered.. Was full when we left though. The food itself was nice, nothing extraordinary but not the worst either. Price was good too. Right down the middle. Great location, nice to sit and watch the birds on the lake but its not enough to keep our 2 year old entertained for 35 minutes whilst waiting for some food. Will visit again but hope its quicker next time round.

Breakfast here for the first time today. Really welcoming staff, friendly atmosphere and probably the owner mentioning Judith Chalmers . Couldn't do enough for me . Food with a view was lovely and I'll definitely be back. Had medium breakfast. Thanks

Arriving at lunchtime meant a small wait. We were served quickly and took seats outside, looking over the lake. Sally brought our drinks and food as soon as it was ready. As always, our meals were tasty. This is a very popular cafe with good reasonably priced food. The service is quick and friendly
